What dog doesn't love treats? It's basically their 'candy'. So, we've created these all natural, homemade dog recipes with the Miniature Schnauzer in mind. Read why homemade dog food may be a better choice for your Miniature Schnauzer.

Baking Tips for Dog Treats & Meals

Before we begin, I just want to point out that while there are lots of dog recipes out there - many of them call for the use of margarine, oils, and other fatty ingredients. I stay clear of these ingredients, since the Miniature Schnauzer is prone to pancreatitis.

Also, I usually substitute oatmeal and rice cereal instead of always using flour, in my Miniature Schnauzer dog recipes. The cookies may not come out looking like cute bone shapes but they are healthier for your dog, and your Schnauzer doesn't care what they look like anyways.

If you want or need to use flour in your Miniature Schnauzer dog recipes - choose a healthy whole wheat flour, oat flour, or garbanzo bean flour!

And when cooking with apples, pumpkins, etc... I add a teaspoon of cinnamon which helps regulate blood sugar (diabetes), improves circulation, and has anti-inflammatory qualities. Great for older Miniature Schnauzer dogs who may be suffering with pain in their joints or arthritis.

PUP-sicles

These cool puppy treats are great during those hot summer months!

Fruity Pupsicle

1 ripe banana mashed well
1/2 cup of naturally sweetened apple juice
1 cup plain no-fat yogurt
1 TBSP honey

Mix all the ingredients very well and freeze in an ice cube tray.

Meaty Pupsicle

1/2 cup of chicken broth
1 cup plain no-fat yogurt

Mix the ingredients and freeze in an ice cube tray.

Doggy Biscuits

Baby foods come in lots of different flavors - chicken, lamb, liver, beef, apple, pumpkin, and lots more! So choose the flavor of your choice and make your schnauzer some these yummy dog biscuits. Just make sure you read the label first to ensure harmful ingredients to dogs, like onions, are not used! And buy organic food when possible.

PAW-some Biscuits

2 jars of baby food (2.5 oz jars) - you choose the flavors
3/4 cup of whole grain baby brown rice cereal
1/2 cup of wheat germ
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together. Drop (small size amounts) on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes!

Dog recipe tip: You can also put the mixture in a plastic baggie. Cut a small slit at one corner - and use it like a frosting bag to squeeze out amounts onto the cookie sheet.

An other great way to make dog biscuits is to use instant plain oatmeal - quick cooking oats.

Alternative to Homemade Dog Biscuit Recipes

Apple Cinnamon
Oatmeal Chews

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Chews

1 Cup quick oats
4 oz. of unsweetened natural apple sauce
1/4 cup dry milk
1 egg
1/4 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well for about 50 strokes. Lightly grease a cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Drop mixture by the teaspoon to create little quarter sized drops. Bake for 15 minutes. Yields about 45 treats! Yummy!

Mini Meals

BARK-fast

2 slices of Turkey Bacon
3 eggs
3 TBSP water

Cook the 2 slices of turkey bacon in a non stick fry pan. Set aside to cool on paper towels.

In a bowl - put the egg whites only (separate and discard the yolk) and
3 TBSP water. Vigorously whisk together.

Next, cut the turkey bacon into small pieces and add to the egg mixture.

Pour the mixture into the non-stick fry pan and cook up an omlette.

Your schnauzer will go bonkers for this delicious breakfast!

Hey, what about lunch and dinner?

If you want to go all the way and prepare your Miniature Schnauzer his very own dinner, try this simple one!

Mini Dinners

4 frozen boneless, skinless chicken thighs
1 cup frozen green beans
1/2 head of cabbage
2 boil-n-bags brown rice
(or 2 cups cooked rice)

In a pot - boil chicken until cooked thoroughly. Steam green beans & cabbage until done. Prepare Rice per directions.

Once everything has cooled - Cut the chicken, green beans, and cabbage into small bite size pieces. Mix all together with the cooked brown rice and sever up by the spoonfuls.

Arrooo!

Other variations of the above dog recipes can be made by using apples, naturally sweetened applesauce, sweet potatoes, turkey, tuna fish, the possibilities are endless.

So go ahead and come up with your very own favorite recipe - just be careful to stay clear of the foods that can harm your pet.
