For years I asked my husband if I could get a bunny for a pet and for years got the same response... No. One Saturday in 2007 he said we were going for a ride. We went to the local big box pet shop and he said he changed his mind and I should look at the bunnies. We went in but I said I'd rather go to the local SPCA because people turn in pets there all the time. So off we went.

It was packed since it was Labor Day weekend and getting help was difficult. We looked at the bunny room then wandered back to the big dog area. We made our way through there and came out by the small dog room. There I spotted a sad looking little mini schnauzer in a crate. Her tag said Shelby, approx 3 yrs old, spayed, housebroken and there for three days. Her owner had gone into a nursing home and she was surrendered by the family.

I pointed to her and asked my husband if we could look at her in the "meeting" room. He had a schnauzer before with his exwife and I knew he loved that dog very much. He just looked at me and I said "and she has natural ears that you like". That's all it took and I filled out what seemed like miles of paperwork just to see her. They are very particular about adopting pets.

Finally they brought her into the room. She and I bonded instantly but she barked at my hubby. They said another family looked at her but she barked at the little boy and husband so they passed on her. When I asked my hubby if we could get her he said he wasn't going to tell me NO.

Five years later we still say it's the best thing we ever did. She is the smartest dog I have ever owned and she is truly my best bud. My hubby says she's the funniest bunny he's even seen. She still barks at him and he loves it!
