How do you stop a Schnauzer from tugging at his lead?

Every time i put the lead on my Schnauzer, he grabs the lead in his mouth and tugs on it like a toy. i have tried treats, water and commands, but nothing seems to work.

He is 2 years old, very playful, loves children and barks a lot. i just can't seem to calm him down before he goes for a walk, he seems to be so excited to go out that he starts to whine, bark and tug on the lead.

I am afraid that it's going to get worse.

I am not sure how to approach this matter, please could someone help by giving some tips or ideas.

Misha and Bowie's Mom
by: Karen

I think the drop leash is a good idea.
Does he bit it while walking? If not, then he's just telling you to hurry up because he's ready! These dogs are very clever and will train you if you're not careful. Give training treats only for good behavior.Good luck with the barking too. Some just bark more than others. Misha always barks at people and other dogs and Bowie doesn't. I did the same training with both.

Taming the Tugger

Good first idea.
Another one is to use a harness instead of a neck collar. It's harder for him to bite at the leash that way.

ignore
by: Anna K

By tugging and giving treats you are encouraging him to play. When he grabs the lead drop it and turn away and ignore him. When he drops the lead, pick it up again, you might have to do this for several times, but he will learn it is not a game if you ignore him. Good luck!
