134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
Host of the TV show 'Extra' and former Broadway cast member of ‘A CHORUS LINE’, Mario Lopez will host the 134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The annual event will take place Feb. 15th and 16th at Madison Square Garden, in New York City.
The Westminster Kennel Club is America's oldest organization dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs. Established in 1877, Westminster's influence has been felt for more than a century through its famous all breed, benched dog show held every year at New York's Madison Square Garden. The show is America’s second longest continuously held sporting event.
10 Most Common Pet Poisons of 2009
The ASPCA experts compiled a list of the ten most common pet poisons so we can all do a better job of keeping our animals healthier in 2010. Here they are:
Top 10 Pet Poisons
1. human medications
2. mis-application of once a month flea treatments
3. ingestion of poisonous people foods
4. household cleaning products
5. poisonous plants
6. misuse of Vet prescribe medications
7. lead, zinc, or mercury poisonings
8. garden products and fertilizers
9. poisonous baits meant for killing rodents
10. chemical hazards, like antifreeze
Prevention is key to avoiding accidental exposure. Always seek immediate treatment from your Veterinarian or Animal Emergency Hospital if you suspect your dog has ingested a toxic substance.
The month of February recognizes quite a few nationwide pet events.
Instead of listing them all here, I will just mention the 2 month long events now and inform you on the others through on the Miniature Schnauzer Blog or on the Schnauzers Rule Facebook Fan Page.
The 2 month long events for February are:
Responsible Pet Owners Month - February 1-28 This event runs throughout the month of February. It is meant for us to recognize the importance of practicing responsible dog ownership while spending some extra time with our furry companions. By practicing safe and responsible behavior toward our dogs, owners will have a more meaningful, joyful, & rewarding, life-long relationships with their pets.
Pet Dental Health Month - February 1-28 This event also runs throughout the month of February. It recognizes the importance of canine dental care and meant to bring awareness and educate pet owners of pet dental hygiene. February has been designated 'National Pet Dental Month' by the American Veterinary Medical Society and the American Veterinary Dental Society.
I cannot stress enough the importance of proper dental care for your Miniature Schnauzer. Without proper dental care, plaque and tartar can form, causing gingivitis and periodontal disease (leading to tooth decay, bleeding gums and tooth loss). These bacteria can travel through your Schnauzer's bloodstream and eventually damage major organs. Make sure to talk to your vet about your Schnauzer’s dental needs and read our tips on brushing your dog's teeth.
